FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men’s volleyball team is set to take on Harvard in the EIVA semifinals on Wednesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. The tournament will be hosted by Penn State, who takes on Princeton in the other semifinal match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Patriots hold a 9-5 lead in the all-time series against Harvard, including a victory at home last season for each team. However, the Crimson won both matches against the Green and Gold this season.
DJ White and Branden Clemens pace the Harvard offense with 3.22 and 3.09 kills per set, respectively. Meanwhile, Caleb Zimmick leads the EIVA with 1.17 blocks per set. White, Clemens, and Zimmick were all named to the All-EIVA first team.
George Mason Notes
The Patriots come into this match with some momentum, after sweeping Princeton and defeating NJIT this past weekend. The match against Princeton was crucial for both teams and determined which team would be the third and fourth seed in the EIVA Tournament.
After the successful weekend, Radoslav Popov was named the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week. Popov recorded 30 kills, 15 digs, and six blocks over the weekend. Hunter Stevens earned his third EIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors as the Patriots swept the EIVA weekly awards. Stevens led the team in both matches and recorded 12 total blocks along with 10 kills for Mason. Both Popov, and Stevens, were named to the All-EIVA second team on Monday.
Brian Negron was named to the All-EIVA first team along with being named the EIVA Newcomer of the Year for his outstanding freshman season. The match against Harvard marks the 15th consecutive year that Coach Chao has guided the Patriots to the EIVA semifinals.
