Harvard's Ethan Smith is the Defensive Player of the Week for Feb. 19, 2024. Ethan led the effort in the Crimson’s defensive wall to sweep a weekend series with Charleston as the programs opened their conference schedules. The senior middle blocker put up 14 blocks, two of them solo stuffs, to lead a Harvard defense that posted 30 blocks on the weekend. He also totaled 14 kills with one error to hit .481 while adding five assists, three aces and four digs. He had eight kills on an error-free .533 hitting with three assists, three aces, four digs and five blocks in a 3-1 win Feb. 16. He followed with six kills on .417 hitting with two assists and nine blocks, one a solo denial, during a 3-2 victory Feb. 17. The nine blocks were a season high, one short of a career high, and one off an EIVA single-match high this year. Smith is hitting .505 this season, which would rank second in the EIVA and nation, but he is 16 swings short of a qualifying average of 3.3 attempts per set. This is the first EIVA weekly honor of the season for Smith and second of his career.
