George Mason's Sam Peters was named the EIVA Defensive Player of the Week for Jan. 8, 2024. Sam was a key defensive asset for the No. 20 Patriots in a season-opening trip to the West Coast that included facing two ranked opponents. In three matches Peters collected 17 kills on .433 hitting with 17 blocks, one solo stuff, four digs and an ace. George Mason. The trip to UC Santa Barbara’s Asics Invitational opened with a 3-1 loss to UC San Diego on Jan. 4, followed by a 3-2 loss to host and No. 15 Gauchos and a 3-1 victory against No. 17 Cal State Northridge. The win against the Matadors was the program’s second all time in five meetings and first since 2017. Peters posted four kills and six blocks in that final match, had five kills and five blocks in the opener against the Tritons, and collected eight kills on an error-free 10 swings to hit .800 with six blocks against UCSB. This is the first weekly EIVA honor for Peters.
