EIVA WEEKLY REPORT

Offensive Player of the Week

George Huhmann, Jr. Opp., Princeton

George had one of the best performances of his career last weekend in leading Princeton to a pair of wins and at least a share of the program’s first EIVA regular-season title. The junior put down 40 kills on .458 hitting, adding seven blocks, seven digs and a pair of aces in a five-set win over Harvard and a 3-0 sweep of Sacred Heart. Huhmann notched a season-high 28 kills while taking a career-high 51 swings to hit .471 against the Crimson. The next night he had a dozen kills on 21 attempts to hit .429 against the Pioneers, adding four blocks, four digs and both of his weekend aces. This is his second EIVA weekly award of the season and seventh of his career.

Defensive Player of the Week

Luis Velez, RS-So., S, George Mason

Luis guided the Patriots to a 1-1 road weekend with his all-around effort. George Mason lost 3-0 to Saint Francis and swept Penn State 3-0. Luis gave out 36 assists in helping the Patriots to a season-best .514 hitting performance against the Nittany Lions, and also had a match-high nine digs. He also had 31 assists and six digs against the Red Flash. His weekend total saw 67 assists, 15 digs, three blocks and five kills. This is the second EIVA weekly award of the season and career for the redshirt sophomore.

Around the EIVA

  • The EIVA tournament has its four participating schools set, though who plays who and where has not yet been determined. Princeton (11-1 EIVA), Saint Francis (9-3), Penn State (9-3) and George Mason (8-4) will make up the field for the conference semifinals on April 18, with the finals on April 20. The tournament will be held at the home of the No. 1 seed. The field was set after Princeton earned wins over Harvard and Sacred Heart, NJIT also beat Harvard, Saint Francis defeated George Mason, the Patriots dropped Penn State and the Red Flash and Nittany Lions defeated Charleston.
  • Princeton is on the verge of clinching the regular-season title, but it’s not yet a lock. The Tigers merely need one win in their final two matches to clinch the No. 1 spot alone. Penn State and Saint Francis, however, do have a mathematical chance, but will need help from the other. In addition, if George Mason wins twice, and Penn State and Saint Francis have 1-1 weekends, there also could be a three-way tie for second. The EIVA’s official tiebreaker rules would apply to any position and for both two-way and three-way ties. The tiebreaker order:
  • If two or more teams are tied for a position within the conference, the tie will be broken by the first differentiating of the following criteria:

                        1.  Head-to-head match record;

                        2. Head-to-head sets won against each other;

                        3.  Head-to-head points amongst the tied teams;

                        4.  Sets winning percentage within the conference;

                        5.  Points against teams within the conference;

                        6.  Coin toss by the EIVA Commissioner.

  • In addition to Princeton, one of the hottest teams in the EIVA heading into the final weekend is its Garden State rival NJIT. The Highlanders have won five of their last six, all by 3-0 sweeps, with the lone loss a four-set decision at George Mason. During the six-match stretch, the Highlanders are hitting .337 while holding opponents to .203 hitting. NJIT also has 38 aces and 54 blocks during the stretch, an average of 6.3 aces and 9.0 blocks per match.
  • Next week, the EIVA will announce its regular-season awards, including the All-EIVA Team, Uvaldo Acosta Player of the Year, Bob Sweeney Coach of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and the All-EIVA Academic Team.
  • At the EIVA tournament, those award winners will be honored, along with the All-Tournament Team, and the 2019 class for the EIVA Hall of Fame. The new hall members are Douglas Emich, Ron Larsen and Tarik Rodgers.
