EIVA WEEKLY REPORT

Offensive Player of the Week

George Huhmann, Jr., Opp, Princeton

George posted big numbers all over the court in a 2-1 week for the Tigers. Princeton won a pair of 3-2 matches against in-state rival NJIT, and fell 3-0 to No. 7 Lewis. The junior opposite had 18 kills, seven blocks and four aces in the first match against the Highlanders on Tuesday, and 13 kills, five digs and five blocks in the second contest on Friday. The next night against the Flyers, he had eight kills on .462 hitting, with four blocks and an ace. George’s three-match total showed 39 kills on .231 hitting, 16 blocks, six digs and five aces. This is his first EIVA weekly award of the season and sixth of his career.

Defensive Player of the Week

Luca Berger, Jr., MB, NJIT

Luca showed a strong presence at the net in the Highlanders’ two matches against Princeton. The junior posted eight kills, five aces and four blocks in the first match, and seven kills on .417 hitting with 10 blocks and a pair of aces in the Friday match. His two-match total saw 15 kills and just four errors to hit .440, adding seven aces, 14 blocks and three digs. This is the second EIVA weekly award of the season and career for the junior.

Around the EIVA

  • The Garden State duel saw a stunning battle last week between Princeton and NJIT, with fans at each of the two matches getting well more than their money’s worth. The EIVA-leading Tigers prevailed in both, but not without difficulty. Tuesday in Princeton’s Dillon Gym, the Tigers won the first two sets, only to see the Highlanders rally all the way to a match point at 14-13 in the fifth set. An NJIT service error and ace from Kendall Ratter (foreshadowing) put the Tigers ahead, and after a Tiger hitting error, Greg Luck and Parker Dixon had kills on the final two points to close the match. On Friday in NJIT’s Wellness Center, the story was the same with the first two sets for Princeton and the next two for the Highlanders. NJIT was serving for the match at 14-12 in the fifth when Ratter closed with a kill and three straight aces. Ratter had four aces in the final set.
  • The EIVA’s teams also saw some of the nation’s best this past week, though all came on the short end. At the Big Ten-Pac 12 Challenge, Penn State lost 3-2 to No. 11 USC and 3-0 to No. 5 UCLA, while Saint Francis lost 3-0 decisions to No. 12 Cal State Northridge and No. 1 Long Beach State, and Princeton lost 3-0 to No. 7 Lewis.
  • This week, George Mason heads west, visiting No. 6 Pepperdine on Tuesday, March 12, and Grand Canyon on Friday and Saturday. Penn State and Saint Francis continue battling ranked foes with trips to Ball State and Purdue Fort Wayne, and conference tussles await for NJIT at Charleston and Sacred Heart at Harvard.

Honorable mention: This week’s top players

  • Parker Dixon (Jr., OH, Princeton) totaled 37 kills, reaching double digits in all three of the Tigers’ matches, and added eight digs.
  • Kendall Ratter (Sr., OH Princeton) totaled 22 kills, six aces, 12 digs and four blocks over his three matches.
  • Alvaro Gimeno (So., OH, NJIT) paced the Highlander offense in the two showdowns with Princeton, posting 17 kills in each match. His totals included 34 kills, .297 hitting, 12 digs, nine blocks and two aces.
  • Henrik Falck Lauten (RS-Jr., Opp., PSU) put down 20 kills with three aces, three blocks and six digs, including 14 kills on .345 hitting with five digs and two aces against USC.
  • Brett Wildman (Fr., OH, PSU) led the Nittany Lions out west with 24 total kills, adding seven digs and a pair of aces. He had 16 kills against USC and eight against UCLA.
  • Gabe Woffindin (RS-Jr., L, SFU) returned to the Red Flash lineup and collected nine digs and 14 receiving assists on the team’s west coast trip.
  • Michael Fisher (RS-Jr., OH, SFU) continued his torrid offensive pace with 28 kills on .452 hitting and two aces against CSUN and Long Beach State. Against the Matadors he collected 18 kills on .654 hitting, making just one error. He has reached double figures in kills in 13 consecutive matches.
  • Max Senica (So., OH, UCWV) had a double-double on March 9 against Emmanuel, with 16 kills and 10 digs, and finished the week with 32 kills and 23 digs.
