EIVA WEEKLY REPORT

Offensive Player of the Week

Parker Dixon, Jr., OH, Princeton

Dixon had a stellar week despite four Tigers losses -- three of them to teams ranked in the top 11 of the AVCA Division I-II preseason poll. He had double-digit kill performances in all four matches, including 19 kills on .485 hitting against Ball State, to total 52 kills for the week. He also had 14 digs, eight blocks, five aces and hit .286 for the week.

Defensive Player of the Week

Luca Berger, Jr., MB, NJIT

Berger had a solid performance in two Highlander losses -- 3-0 to Purdue-Fort Wayne and 3-2 to Ball State. He totaled 12 kills on .455 hitting, averaging 1.5 kills per set, with six digs and 10 blocks, three of them solo stuffs. Against Ball State, he had eight kills on .538 hitting and eight blocks, three solo.

Around the League

  • The EIVA had a rough opening week to the season, but the conference's teams were up for a challenge. EIVA teams posted a combined record of 2-11, but nine of those losses were to teams ranked in the AVCA's Division I-II preseason top-15 poll, and all of the matches were played away from home. George Mason posted both of the conference's wins.
  • Princeton had the busiest week, with 4 matches over 7 days -- all on the road, and 3 against Top-15 teams (No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 Pepperdine, T-No. 14 Purdue-Fort Wayne).
  • The Tigers' match against the Mastadons on Jan. 5 featured a family reunion, with Princeton defensive specialist Cade Keegan on one side of the net, and older brother Michael, PFW's setter, on the other side. The Mastadons prevailed in a 3-0 sweep.
  • George Mason won its season-opener for a 3rd straight year, with each of those wins by 3-0 sweeps. The Patriots beat Queens in this season's starter with a dominating defensive effort, forcing the Royals into minus-.240 hitting for the match and hitting negative in all 3 sets. George Mason was especially strong offensively in the 3rd set, hitting .455 (11-1-22).
  • The next night in a 3-1 win at Barton, the Patriots delivered 12 service aces, led by six from Sam Greenslade.
  • Harvard also had a busy and challenging opening week, facing 3 AVCA-ranked opponents, including top-ranked and defending national champion Long Beach State. Two of those matches went to a fifth set.
  • The highlight set -- and match -- that hardly anyone on the east coast got to see was played in Santa Barbara, Calif., in the Asics Invitational. No. 11 CSUN prevailed in 5 sets, but Harvard won the first 2 frames, and had five match points in the third before dropping that game 34-32. Despite the loss, the Crimson bested the Matadors in blocking (12-6) and hitting (.287-.248).
  • In Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 5, the two winningest active coaches in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball met. Ohio State's Pete Hanson (703 wins, 34th season) guided the Buckeyes to a 3-1 victory over Penn State and coach Mark Pavlik (558 wins, 25th season).
  • NJIT nearly pulled off a huge comeback. After spotting Ball State the first two sets (25-20, 25-17), the Highlanders rallied to take the next two frames (25-22, 25-21), but the Cardinals prevailed 15-10 in the fifth.

Other top performers

  • Enrique de Diego Garcia, NJIT: 11 kills, .526 hitting, 6 blocks in 2 losses. Eight kills, no errors, .667 hitting vs. Ball State.
  • Hayden Wagner, George Mason: 24 kills, .240 hitting, 4 aces, 9 blocks, 2 solo in 2 wins. Nine kills, 6 blocks vs. Queens.
  • Jack Reese, George Mason: 9 kills, .467 hitting, 8 blocks, 2 solo, 4 digs in 2 wins.
  • Trevor Dow, Harvard: 16 kills, .387 hitting, 13 blocks, 2 solo in 3 losses.
  • Matt Ctvrtlik, Harvard: 5 kills, .273 hitting, 88 assists, 2 aces in 3 losses.
  • Cal Mende, Penn State: 18 kills, .351 hitting, 2 blocks in loss to Ohio State.
