UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No.2-seeded Saint Francis men's volleyball team fell to top-seeded Penn State in straight sets in the EIVA Championship on Saturday night at Rec Hall. The Flash fell 19-25, 14-25 and 20-25.
Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine)) led the Flash with 12 kills, while Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) added seven. Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) dished out 27 assists to go along with four digs. Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) recorded six digs.
Saint Francis jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set after a kill from Fisher and Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg). Penn State responded with a 3-0 run to take a 4-3 advantage. The Nittany Lions maintained the lead until a Braswell service ace cut the advantage to four, 17-21, and forced Penn State to call a timeout. PSU would take the first set 25-19.
The Nittany Lions took a 6-3 advantage in the second set. Saint Francis rallied to pull within three, 11-8 after a Kegerreis kill. The Nittany Lions quickly countered with a 3-0 run to take a 14-8 edge. PSU rolled to a 25-14 win.
Both teams traded points in the early going of the third set before Penn State took a two-point lead at 9-7. Saint Francis remained within striking distance and found themselves within one, 11-12, after a Penn State attack error. The Red Flash cut the lead to one on multiple occasions, but the Nittany Lions continued to keep the pressure on and led by as many as three, 18-15. The Flash kept chipping away at the lead, but Penn State held on to take the set and match, 25-20.
Saint Francis ended the season with a 16-15 overall record and was 11-5 in the EIVA.
Kegerreis and Fisher were named to the All-EIVA Tournament Team.
