BRONXVILE, N.Y. – Javier Gaspar is the first of three inductees to be showcased on EIVAVolleyball.com as we look back at the careers of all three of the 2015 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Hall of Fame members.
Gaspar was a member of the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1985-88, playing for legendary head coach and fellow member of the EIVA Hall of Fame, Tom Tait. Javier's play was renowned from an early stage, gaining national attention by being named an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention his freshman year. His sophomore season saw Gaspar earn AVCA All-America Second Team honors and then was named to the AVCA All-America First Team his junior and senior years.
In 1986 and 1987 Javier helped guide Penn State to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and three EIVA Tournament Championships ('85-'87). He was named to the All-East/All-EIVA Team in each of his four seasons with the Nittany Lions and was a member of the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team in 1987. Additionally in 1987, Gaspar played in the World University Games as a member of the United States team.
Following his career at Penn State, Gaspar went on to play professionally at the international level. He also competed with the United States National Team as the starting setter in 1989.
Next week EIVAVolleyball.com will feature our second inductee, Marin Gjaja of Princeton.
