George Mason Erases Two-Set Deficit to Down IPFW,
3-2
Patriots win the final three sets to snap five-match
losing streak
FAIRFAX, Va. (March 20, 2010) – The George Mason men’s
volleyball team fell behind early but rallied to win the final
three sets to take a 3-2 victory over IPFW on Saturday evening at
the RAC. Final set scores were 25-30, 28-30, 30-28, 30-18 and
15-12.
After dropping the first two sets to the Mastodons, things looked
bleak for the Patriots in the third set when they fell behind by
six points at 25-19 following a kill by IPFW’s Darryl Shank.
A resilient Mason squad mounted a comeback, tying the score at 26
after an attack error by Elon Fyfield of IPFW. After Fyfield
rebounded with a kill to give IPFW a one-point lead, the Patriots
won the next three points to take a 29-27 lead.
With the set on the line, IPFW took the next point on a kill by
Corey Frain. Leading 29-28, Mason won the set on a kill by freshman
Michael Kvidahl.
The third set win seemed to spark the Patriots as they didn’t
trail for a single point throughout the final two sets. Mason hit
.296 as a team in cruising to a 12-point victory in the fourth set
and a sizzling .444 as a unit in a 15-12 win in the final set.
The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the deciding fifth set and
never looked back. The Mastodons closed the deficit to within a
point twice but each time Mason answered with a kill to put an end
to any thoughts of an IPFW rally.
Kvidahl led Mason’s attack with 20 kills. Junior outside
hitter Eric Lucas recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12
digs. Freshman libero Max McFarland led all players with 16 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Lance Rogers led the Patriots with 10
total blocks as Mason recorded 19 as a team.
Fyfield and Shank both recorded double-doubles for the Mastodons.
Fyfield finished with 28 kills and 12 digs, while Shank recorded 18
kills and 11 digs.
With the win, George Mason improved its record to 5-11 while
snapping a five-match losing streak. IPFW dropped to 8-11 on the
season after falling for the second time to the Patriots.
